PM says Merkel's support to government agenda good signal

Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic said at the start of the government session on Friday that his talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin last week were very successful in the context of the strengthening of international relations, underscoring Merkel's support to his government's agenda which, according to him, is a positive signal.

He underscored there was great potential for cooperation on the investment front, stressing it was important to strengthen the investment climate and announcing an investment forum.

We are focused on the reduction of debt and deficit, Oreskovic said, adding that meeting the Maastricht criteria would be a great success and that it would pave the way for euro adoption.

Oreskovic said he and Merkel talked about the refugee crisis and he thanked Interior Minister Vlaho Orepic for good cooperation and coordination with the police forces of Austria, Slovenia, Serbia and Macedonia.

Oreskovic said that the Schengen regime in Greece would be strengthened in an effort to drastically slow down the refugee wave, adding that it was necessary to adopt a strategy. He also recalled a recent meeting with European Council President Donald Tusk regarding this issue.

Commenting on proposed amendments to the Defence Act and the State Border Control Act, namely the engagement of armed forces along the border, the prime minister said that solutions like this were already being implemented in Slovenia and Serbia.
