Pokupsko biomass-fuelled heating plant project awarded in Brussels

A project for a biomass-fuelled heating plant in the municipality of Pokupsko, conducted by the municipal authorities and the North-west Croatia Regional Energy Agency, was recently given an EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) award.

The winners of the EUSEW annual awards for innovative energy projects were announced at a ceremony in Brussels on 14 June.

A short film introduced each of the nine finalists for most outstanding and innovative energy projects in three categories – Consumers, Public Sector, and Businesses. A spokesperson from the jury, charged with the task of choosing the winners in each category, made the announcement before a packed auditorium.

Sustainable-energy transformation, Municipality of Pokupsko (Croatia), the winning project in the Public Sector prize, shows that even with a limited budget local governments can implement sustainable solutions, it was said.

“This is the highlight of the Week because it showcases the best that Europe has to offer in sustainable and renewable energy and we've been inspired by the finalists and winners over the years, ” said Miguel Arias Cañete, Commissioner for Energy and Climate Action, in his welcome speech at the EUSEW awards ceremony.
