Police investigating fire at Roma family's home

A five-member Roma family, whose hut in Zagreb's Pescenica neighbourhood burned down on Thursday night, was relocated to a shelter for the homeless in Kosnica outside Zagreb, while another Roma family with eight children living in a hut next door and other Roma families in the same neighbourhood were put under police protection.

The site of the accident was visited by Zagreb Deputy Mayor Vesna Kusin, the head of the city's Crisis Management Office, Pavle Kalinic, and the head of the Zagreb City Roma Minority Council, Muhamed Zahirovic.

Kalinic said that police would provide for the safety of Roma families living in Pescenica.

He stressed that it was not yet known what had caused the fire and that an investigation was under way.

The head of the Zagreb City Assembly Committee for Ethnic Minorities, Dan Spicer, said that he would want to believe that this was not an ethnically motivated incident but that many things pointed to that conclusion.

He called on the police to complete the investigation as soon as possible, noting that this was the second attack in the last three days.

Early on Monday morning, an unidentified person threw a bomb at a building housing a Roma kindergarten and a Roma association in Pescenica.

The vice president of the Zagreb City Roma Minority Counil, Nedjatin Kamberovski, said that this was the fourth attack on the Roma in the last couple of months, expressing hope that the relevant institutions would do their job.
