President Grabar-Kitarovic says Genscher Croatia's great friend

President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic on Friday expressed her condolences to her German counterpart Joachim Gauck over the death of former foreign minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher, saying that he was a great friend of Croatia, the President's Office has reported.

Genscher, who had a key role in uniting Germany in the early nineties of the past century as well as in Croatia's international recognition, died on Friday aged 89.

"Croatia will always remember Mr Hans-Dietrich Genscher as a great friend. At the time of the Croatian state's beginnings, Mr Genscher was an advocate of Croatia's international recognition. His support in those most difficult times helped create the foundations of future firm and friendly relations between our two countries which we nurture and strengthen together even today," Grabar-Kitarovic said in her letter of condolence.

She assessed that Genscher left a strong mark on the history and foreign policy of Germany and the entire European Union, working ardently on relations between the East and West.

The President considers his departure as a huge loss for international politics in which he was exceptionally active during his 18 years in the foreign affairs office.

"Promoting peace, understanding between nations and nurturing dialogue were constants in his political engagement. He was a man who with dedicated and systematic work, regard and tact attracted admiration of many and respect from even those who did not share his views."

"His political activity, which was always imbued with deep humanity, will remain a lasting inspiration to many," President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic wrote.
