President proposes govt session to tackle Croat hooliganism in France

President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic on Saturday proposed convening a session of the Croatian government to address hooliganism that marred Croatia's Euro 2016 match against the Czech Republic in France on Friday, her office said in a press release.

The president urges sanctions against hooliganism and inappropriate behaviour of "alleged fans" at sporting events. Likewise, she suggests amending the relevant legislation and harsher steps against hooligans.

Europe's soccer governing body UEFA said on Saturday it had opened disciplinary proceedings against the Croatian soccer federation for crowd trouble during the Euro 2016 tournament in France.

Croatia's match against the Czech Republic, which ended in a draw (2-2) on Friday afternoon in Saint-Etienne, was marked by an incident caused by Croatian fans who threw flares and fought among themselves, and hooliganism was condemned in the strongest terms by Croatia's players and coach as well as by President Grabar-Kitarovic, the Education and Sports Ministry and the national Olympic Committee (HOO).

Hooligans in the section housing Croatia fans threw a few flares on the pitch and a scuffle erupted among the troublemakers in the final minutes of the game. The match had to be held up for several minutes because of the incident.
