Prosecutors request life imprisonment for Perkovic and Mustac

German prosecutors have requested life imprisonment for Yugoslav-era Croatian intelligence officials Josip Perkovic and Zdravko Mustac over the murder of Croatian dissident Stjepan Djurekovic near Munich in 1983.

Presenting their closing arguments before a Munich court on Tuesday, the prosecution changed the charge of aiding and abetting to complicity in premeditated murder.

Presiding judge Manfred Dauster continued to insist that a verdict be delivered on August 3.

Counsel for the widow Gizela Djurekovic, acting as a co-prosecutor in the case, is due to make a closing statement on Thursday, after which closing arguments will be presented by the defence.

Anto Nobilo, counsel for the accused Josip Perkovic, told Hina that the prosecution mostly relied on circumstantial evidence, while Sinisa Pavlovic, counsel for Mrs Djurekovic, said that the evidence presented by the prosecution showed that the accused were guilty not of aiding and abetting as originally charged but of complicity and recommended the only possible punishment in such cases - life imprisonment.
