Public debt totals EUR 38.7b at end of Feb

At the end of February 2016, Croatia's public debt totalled HRK 289.7 billion, HRK 1.5 billion less on the month but HRK 4.2 billion more on the year (+1.5%), the central bank (HNB) said on Wednesday.

In relation to the end of 2015, in the first two months of 2016 the public debt went up a mere HRK 1.6 million. The domestic debt increased HRK 1.2 billion to HRK 172.6 billion at the end of February, while the foreign debt decreased by nearly HRK 1.2 billion to HRK 117.1 billion.

This indicates that at the start of this year the government primarily borrowed on the domestic market, the Croatian Chamber of Commerce said, adding that the public debt continued to be generated by the central government, which accounted for 98.3% of the total public debt. The central government's debt in February increased 1.7%.

The central government's debt at the end of February 2016 totalled HRK 284.7 billion, HRK 4.7 billion more on the year. The central government's domestic debt increased HRK 2.5 billion annually to HRK 168.1 billion, while its foreign debt increased HRK 2.2 billion to HRK 116.6 billion.

The local government's debt at the end of February 2016 totalled HRK 5.2 billion, nearly HRK 400 million less on the year (-7.1%).
