Pupovac says difficult for SDSS to take part in Aug 5 celebrations because of the way holiday is marked

The vice president of the Independent Democratic Serb party (SDSS), Milorad Pupovac, in the eastern Croatian town of Vukovar on Sunday once again commented on the atmosphere and the celebration of Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and Veterans' Day in Knin, saying that because of the way that day is celebrated, it was very hard for the SDSS to take part in it.

"Anybody who cares about this country, its Constitution, the rule of law and honourable people and their contribution to peace and freedom in Croatia should not take part in this kind of marking of that day," Pupovac said.

"They dishonoured many who fought with their lives and honour for a different Croatia and not for a Croatia advocated by individuals there (Knin)".

Asked why this year either Serb minority representatives did not attend the marking of Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day in Vukovar, Pupovac said he did not know this holiday was being marked anywhere else but in Knin.

The celebration in Knin was marred by incidents.

A group of about 40 men in black T-shirts briefly blocked Knin's main street around 2 pm on Friday, singing Ustasha songs and shouting the Ustasha salute "For the homeland ready!", which citizens reported to the police.

Some in the group raised their arms in the fascist salute and lit flares, and would not let cars, including a police van, pass through for several minutes. Police arrested two men for setting the Serbian flag on fire.
