Pusic comments on divisions over her UN bid

A candidate for the position of UN Secretary-General, Vesna Pusic, said in Zagreb on Saturday that the government was not divided over support for her candidacy.

"I can see no divisions. This is an ongoing process. We should be smart and should not disgrace the country. We have not disgraced ourselves so far and let's not disgrace ourselves in the future," Pusic told the press on the margins of an election convention of her HNS party.

She said that everything that had been done so far regarding her candidacy "is decent and does credit to us as a country."

Asked to comment on a petition against her candidacy that was circulating in the parliament, Pusic said that "it's always the same people who disgrace Croatia, but they don't deserve attention".

Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic said earlier this week that Pusic enjoyed the support of his government as a candidate for UN Secretary-General and that they would not obstruct her. However, the HSP AS party, a junior partner in the ruling coalition, launched a petition in the parliament on Friday against her candidacy, saying that it would send a letter to the permanent members of the UN Security Council to the effect that Vesna Pusic did not deserve the position of UN Secretary-General.

In New York on Wednesday, Pusic answered questions from members of the world organisation for two hours as part of elections for a successor to Ban Ki-moon, whose term expires at the end of the year. The former foreign minister of Croatia is one of the eight candidates running for the post, and the new UN Secretary-General could be known in September.
