Pusic: Meeting with PM was very good

Former Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic met with Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic on Thursday to discuss her candidacy for the post of UN Secretary-General.

"It was a very good meeting. The prime minister was interested in the whole procedure, what will happen next, who the candidates are, the election procedure in general," Pusic told the press after the meeting.

She said that the Security Council would begin discussions on the matter in July and a proposal would most likely be made in October, after which it would be put to a vote in the General Assembly.

When asked if she had the prime minister's support, Pusic said: "Yes, I do. The way he said it I assume I do."

Asked if they discussed the initiative by the HSP AS party, a member of the ruling coalition, which is collecting signatures against her candidacy, Pusic said that they did not discuss it much, but only briefly commented on it. Asked what the prime minister said, she said that the question should be addressed to him.

Pusic said that they did not talk about the support of the entire Cabinet for her candidacy. "We didn't go into that. He had stated in public when I was going to New York that he hoped to hear details from me. I told him that if he invited me I would gladly come to see him and tell what it was about, which is what I have done today."

Commenting on the statement by First Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Karamarko that she would have the government's technical support, Pusic said she assumed he meant that "our embassies and embassy staff" in countries she should be visiting would provide her with necessary support, "which is their job."
