Retired generals launch declaration with guidelines for Croatia's policies

The association of retired Croatian generals and admirals that goes by the abbreviation "HGZ" on Saturday launched its declaration that contains "guidelines that should in the long run create Croatia's policies, primarily with the aim protecting national interests," HGZ chairman Pavao Miljavac said.

Presenting the document at a news conference, Miljavac said that the retired generals would not become involved in politics or electioneering and that they would support parties and coalitions that would "reinvigorate the constitutional provision on the (1991-1995) Homeland Defence War as a foundation of the present-day Croatian state."

"We have started from the Homeland Defence War as a foundation of the present-day Croatian state in order to put an end to discussions about the Second World War," Miljavac said, adding that those discussions were misleading and were causing divisions in the society.

He stressed that the any attempt to divide Croatia into regions "is pernicious".

According to him, the retired generals advocate the reintroduction of army conscription in the form of three-month training in army camps.

The HGZ declaration comprises recommendations in several fields, including the economy, security, environment, and demography.
