Ruling party criticises national broadcaster

The Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) said on Monday that Croatian Radio Television (HRT) was not serving its purpose of being a public broadcaster in accordance with European values -

"Public television programmes should be the reflection of the fundamental values of Croatian society and HRT, as a public broadcasting service in accordance with European values, should be a professional, plural and objective public radio and television. Unfortunately, HRT today does not fulfil its fundamental duty. Therefore we believe it is legitimate to launch a democratic procedure so as to free HRT of politics and return it to the sphere of the profession and common good," the HDZ said in a statement.

The ruling party also criticised the public television by saying that its work was not in accordance with the will of the majority of Croatian citizens.

Spokesman for HRT Igor Cutuk told Hina that HRT, should it be necessary, would voice its opinion about the latest criticism coming from the ranks of the ruling coalition at a later date.
