Sabor appoints 10 Constitutional Court judges

Parliament on Friday appointed ten Constitutional Court judges by a two-thirds majority thus avoiding a constitutional crisis that might have occurred on June 7 had the Constitutional Court remained without a quorum.

Andrej Abarmovic and Lovorka Kusan received the most votes from deputies in the Sabor - 136 each. Rajko Mlinaric and Miroslav Sumanovic were supported by 134 deputies while Branko Brkic received the confidence of 132 MPs. Josip Leko received 118 votes, Davorin Mlakar and Ingrid Anticevic Marinovic received 117 each, while Snjezana Bagic received the least votes, 112.

These 10 candidates were short-listed among 41 applicants following four months of negotiations between the ruling majority in the parliament and the Opposition.

Voting for Constitutional Court judges in parliament was conducted in an open session.

The Parliamentary Credentials and Privileges Commission on Friday recommended replacements for incumbent MPs Leko, Anticevic-Marinovic and Mlakar. Their seats in the parliament will be taken by Drazen Pros and Davorko Vidovic of the Social Democratic Party and Tomislav Coric of the Croatian Democratic Union.
