Sabor Speaker: Opposition has made "big story" out of nonappointment

Croatian Parliament Speaker Zeljko Reiner of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) on Friday criticised the Opposition, of having made "a big story" out of the non-appointment of Social Democrat (SDP) MP Ranko Ostojic as the chairman of the parliamentary committee of Home Affairs and National Security Committee, explaining that it was beyond doubt that the Opposition was entitled to have its representative at the helm of that committee.

The Sabor Speaker elaborated, during his visit to the eastern town of Zupanja, that in the event that Ostojic had been appointed the chair of the said committee, he would probably have been found in a conflict of interest very soon.

The Opposition's proposal to appoint former interior minister Ostojic (SDP) as the Home Affairs and National Security Committee's chairman was rejected Elections and Appointments Committee by a majority vote on Friday morning.

Many fear that Ostojic may soon be found in a conflict of interest, and therefore doubt whether he is the right person for that post, Reiner said in the evening reiterating that the post of the parliamentary committee of Home Affairs and National Security Committee is intended for the Opposition's candidate.

After the refusal by Elections and Appointments Committee, the The Opposition then used a mechanism envisaged by the Standing Orders which enables a discussion and a vote on any conclusion if at least 15 MPs make such a request, however, Parliament Speaker Reiner did not approve the request to add the proposal to the agenda on Friday, announcing instead that the conclusion would be added to the agenda within the time frame specified by the orders, namely 30 days.

Opposition parties in the parliament accused the ruling majority of violating the Security-Intelligence Services Act by refusing to support the nomination of former interior minister Ostojic.
