SDP demands Karamarko's resignation

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) group in the Croatian Parliament on Wednesday called for the resignation of First Deputy Prime Minister and HDZ leader Tomislav Karamarko, claiming that because of business transactions between his wife and a consultant for the Hungarian oil and gas group MOL he put his private interests before national ones.

"If he refuses to go, if he shows utter contempt for Croatian citizens and their interests, the SDP group will then initiate a procedure for his impeachment in Parliament," SDP MP Pedja Grbin said.

Grbin recalled the case of Mijo Crnoja of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) who resigned just days after taking office. "HDZ members of government always have one and the same flaw, they put their private interests before public interests," he said.

Commenting on the latest revelation by Nacional weekly that Ana Karamarko's marketing agency had done business with Petrovic's consulting firm, Grbin wondered how it was possible that a small and unknown Croatian firm had managed to find a client who paid it 20,000 kuna every month in the middle of a severe economic crisis.

He said Mr Karamarko was not bothered by the fact that his wife's company was connected with MOL when deciding on arbitration in the INA case or by the fact that a person who was paying 20,000 kuna a month to his wife's company was hired by MOL to conduct political intelligence activities in Croatia.
