SDP MP accuses gov't of dismantling welfare state in Croatia

Social Democrat parliamentarian and former Labour and Pension System Minister Mirando Mrsic on Thursday criticised a government plan which, according to the latest media reports, would lead to raising the statutory age for old-age retirement.

Mrsic held a news conference at which he accused the current government of planning a pension system reform against citizens' interests, and of trying to dismantle the existing welfare state.

"The pseudo-government led by a Prime Minister (Tihomir Oreskovic) who has no political clout, is obviously unable to oppose the European Commission's orders," Mrsic said.

He also claimed that the government was planning to lower the cost of labour.

In 2015, the European Commission recommended that Croatia should discourage early retirement by raising penalties for early exits, improve the adequacy and efficiency of pension spending by tightening the definition of arduous and hazardous professions, and tackle the fiscal risks in healthcare.

Media reports on Thursday also triggered a heated debate in parliament in which the Opposition insisted that the government planned to raise the statutory age for old-age pensions from 65 to 67.
