SDP official: There are similarities between our, Bridge's positions, we could cooperate

Social Democrat and former Finance Minister Boris Lalovac said on Saturday that there were similarities between the positions of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Bridge based on which they could cooperate.

"We are fairly close to Bridge in terms of economic issues and we could cooperate very well, if the occasion arises," Lalovac told reporters in Split.

Lalovac, who heads the People's Coalition slate in Constituency No. 10, arrived unannounced at the city's Pjaca square with his party colleague Arsen Bauk and Srdjan Gjurkovic, official of the Croatian People's Party (HNS), as a previously announced rally of the Bridge party was beginning.

Bridge leader Bozo Petrov presented at the rally his party's seven terms for cooperation with the SDP and the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ).

When asked by reporters if his and his colleagues' presence there meant that the ground was being prepared for negotiations with Bridge, Lalovac said that it was purely coincidental.

He said that nobody was currying favour with anyone, however, "we did have some joint projects."

Lalovac recalled that the SDP had supported legislative amendments concerning the Croatian National Bank that Bridge was now proposing.

"We have very similar positions on VAT reduction and income tax. We have similar positions on taxation policy so I don't think that we would be able to cooperate very well," said Lalovac.

"Forming a stable government is the most important thing because the budget has to be adopted in October and there is not much time for negotiations," he said.

Reporters asked Petrov for a comment on Lalovac's positions on Bridge and the HDZ's increasingly frequent criticisms of Bridge in recent days, to which he said that he did not concern himself about "either the SDP's or the HDZ's perception (of Bridge)."
