SDP proposes bills on referendum, financing of political activities

The strongest opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP) parliamentary group on Friday forwarded to parliament a referendum bill and a bill on the financing of political activities and electoral and referendum promotion.

The referendum law would define procedures to call and conduct referendums, prescribe places where signatures can be collected to launch a referendum initiative and questions that cannot be put to a referendum as well as regulate referendum campaigning.

The SDP's bill on the financing of political activities, election and referendum campaigning foresees regulating finances for referendum campaigns.

The SDP proposes that the amount to finance political parties from the state budget, instead of being related to budget revenues, should be 0.08% of tax revenue generated in the preceding year, with a platform of HRK 50 million.

Asked whether SDP expected that the Bridge party would support the bills, SDP MP Pedja Grbin said that the bills have nothing to do with Bridge. "These are SDP's proposals that endeavour to regulate an area that we consider is not regulated well. If anyone will support them, we will be grateful. This though is primarily a message that in SDP we consider that this area needs to be regulated and it is up to Bridge to assess if they agree or not, and if they do, then to support the bills," he said.
