Serb leader raps Oreskovic over inadequate approach to minorities

Croatian Serb leader Milorad Pupovac has criticised the new Croatian Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic for failure to mention ethnic minorities in the programme the PM outlined in parliament when seeking approval for his cabinet.

Pupovac, a parliamentary deputy of the Independent Democratic Serb Party (SDSS) in the new Croatian legislature, told Serbia's national broadcaster RTS on Sunday that Croatia had now got a government that did not make any mention of minorities or the authorities' obligations to ensure the return of Serb refugees and ethnic Serbs' representation in the executive authorities or the exercise of minority rights.

"In that regard this is the first government since 2006 that has nothing except a courtesy statement made by the Prime Minister-designate during the presentation of his programme," Pupovac said.

Pupovac also noted that all newsletters and publications of the ethnic Serb People's Council "speak about a rise in hate speech and about restriction of minority rights" with the most drastic example being the situation about the Cyrillic alphabet.

"We hope that this will change," he added.

Pupovac said that public comments and statements of some new ministers about a register of traitors and the negation of anti-Fascist heritage considerably disturbed the Croatian Serb community.
