Survey unemployment rate in Q3 2015 down to 15.4 pct

The survey-based unemployment rate in Croatia in the third quarter of 2015 fell to 15.4 per cent from 15.7 per cent in the same quarter of 2014, according to the results of a labour force survey carried out by the National Bureau of Statistics (DZS).

The survey unemployment rate, based on the methodology of the International Labour Organisation, was 0.1 percentage points lower in the third quarter of 2015 than in the second quarter of the same year when it was 15.5 per cent.

The number of unemployed persons in the third quarter of 2015 was 297,000, or 7,000 fewer than in the third quarter of 2014.

A comparison of data supplied by the National Employment Service (HZZ) and other administrative sources shows that in the third quarter of 2015 the unemployment rate based on administrative records was higher than the survey-based rate, namely 16 per cent as against 15.4 per cent, the DZS said. This indicates a drop in the number of job seekers who register with the HZZ.

Of the 297,000 unemployed people polled, 258,000 said they were registered with the HZZ. However, 4,000 or 1.6 per cent of them did not meet the international unemployment criteria, so the actual number of job seekers registered with the HZZ was 254,000 or 85.4 per cent, while 14.6 per cent of the total number of the unemployed said they were not registered.

The number of people in employment in the third quarter of 2015 was 1.63 million, which was 27,000 more than in the previous quarter, but 6,000 fewer than in the third quarter of 2014. The employment-population ratio was 45.3 per cent, up from both the previous quarter and the third quarter of 2014. In the second quarter of 2015 it was 44.5 per cent and in the third quarter of 2014 it was 45.2 per cent.

The number of working-age people (15 years and over) in the third quarter of 2015 was 3.6 million, of whom 1.9 million were active (both employed and unemployed) and 1.67 million were inactive. The activity rate, which shows the proportion of the active population in the working-age population, was 53.5 per cent, which was 0.8 percentage points higher than in the second quarter of 2015 and 0.2 percentage points lower than in the third quarter of 2014.
