Traditional consumer basket for holiday season estimated at HRK 1,956

The traditional consumer basket for a family of three for the Christmas and New Year's season in Croatia this year will be HRK 1,956 (about 255 euros), the Croatian Independent Trade Unions (NHS) said on Monday.

A more modest basket, which includes costs of food for a three-member household, will range between HRK 802 and 530.

The NHS said that only a small number of people would be able to afford extravagant celebrations of Christmas and the New Year, while the majority would be celebrating the two holidays more with anxiety than with hope.

Based on increased consumption this year, an increase in non-taxable income, Christmas bonuses, gifts for children and gifts in kind, the NHS estimated consumption in December 2015 at HRK 11.5 billion. By comparison, consumption in December 2014 was HRK 11 billion.

An increase in consumer optimism requires an increase in social optimism, which is lacking due to post-election developments relating to the formation of a new government and uncertainty what the new government will do, the NHS said.
