Triage nurses to assess urgent cases following emergency medical aid reform

As part of emergency medical assistance reform, which is expected to be carried out in two months at the latest, triage nurses in emergency rooms will evaluate which patients truly require emergency approach and which can wait and those who can wait will be sent back to their family doctors.

Emergency medical assistance reform is the first reform in the health system announced by new Health Minister Dario Nakic and it is aimed at relieving emergency rooms where people wait for hours because of patients whose condition does not require urgent attention and who, according to the Health Ministry, make up 60% of all cases.

The decision on which patient is urgent and which isn't will be made by triage nurses.

Earlier this week, the government pushed for amendments to the law on the bailout of public institutions, proposing that plans regarding the bailout in the health sector be abandoned as it had not yielded the expected results.

Currently 31 health institutions are in a bailout process and if parliament adopts the government's proposal, they will be returned to their founders which in most cases are county authorities.

The health minister claims the amendments would result in a saving of the cost of salaries for bailout committee members.
