Trials against Sanader and Hernadi in INA-MOL case joined

Zagreb's County Court has decided to join the trials against former prime minister and former leader of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) Ivo Sanader and Hungarian energy company MOL CEO Zsolt Hernadi in the INA-MOL corruption case.

The court decided that there were mutual connections and that the indictments were based on the same evidence in the INA-MOL case and that both proceedings are at the same stage, which justifies a joinder of the proceedings.

Sanader is charged in the Hypo and INA-MOL case with war profiteering and taking a bribe from MOL. Hernadi's trial for bribing the former prime minister was to have started in February, but was postponed because the Supreme Court did not return the file following an appeal lodged by Hernadi's defence because the documents had not been translated into Hungarian.

Hernadi is still unavailable to Croatian authorities. In mid-October, Croatian police asked their Austrian and German colleagues to explain why they failed to act on a European Arrest Warrant against Hernadi, who had travelled outside Hungary despite the corruption charges against him in Croatia.
