U.S. to donate 16 used Kiowa helicopters to Croatia

The Croatian Defence Ministry has confirmed that a Croatian Armed Forces' team of experts, led by Colonel Michael Krizanac, visited the United States and selected 16 used OH-58D Kiowa helicopters which the US Army will donate to the Croatian Army and Air Force, adding that "the used helicopters are in excellent condition."

These helicopters do not have many flight hours and they are excellent aircraft, the ministry said in a press release adding that the donated helicopters should fly in Croatian skies next year.

The US Congress had earlier granted the donation to Croatia and the choppers will be taken over by the new defence minister after the new government is formed.

The OH-58 Kiowa is a single-engine, single-rotor, military helicopter used for observation, utility, and direct fire support. Bell Helicopter manufactured the OH-58 for the United States Army based on its Model 206A JetRanger helicopter. The OH-58 has been in continuous use by the U.S. Army since 1969.

The latest model, the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior, is primarily operated in an armed reconnaissance role in support of ground troops.
