Veterans ministry resents Seselj's acquittal

The Veterans' Affairs Ministry on Thursday expressed resentment at the ICTY's acquittal of Vojislav Seselj and called on veterans not to be disheartened, saying "we won together in the Homeland War knowing who our enemy was, together we will defend the truth and with dignity advocate the betterment of Croatia."

"We consider the leader of the Serbian Radical Party as one of the most responsible for the crimes committed during the Homeland War in Croatia because of his deployment of Serb forces against Croatia and numerous hate speeches," the ministry said in a statement issued in reaction to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) verdict acquitting Seselj on all counts of his indictment charging him with war crimes in Croatia, Vojvodina and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The ministry expresses "great regret because victims once again have to relive their war traumas and because justice is absent," stressing that the verdict is the most difficult for the families of those killed or missing veterans who have been seeking answers regarding the fate of their loved ones for more than 20 years.

The ministry said that  "it will persevere in promoting the truth about the Homeland War and the role of all those who participated in any way in committing war crimes during the aggression against Croatia and work towards their conviction."
