War veterans committee chair asks for urgent meeting with PM

The chair of the parliament's War Veterans Committee, Miodrag Demo, on Sunday expressed disappointment after Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) secretary-general Milijan Brkic gave up on his candidacy for War Veterans Minister, asking for an urgent meeting with Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic.

Demo, elected to the parliament on the slate of the Bandic Milan 365 party, said that one should have insisted on Brkic, the candidate of the HDZ-led Patriotic Coalition, and that the lack of coordination between Oreskovic, his first deputy and HDZ leader Tomislav Karamarko and Bridge party leader and Deputy PM Bozo Petrov had disgraced war veterans.

He particularly warned that the government was in the process of adopting the budget for this year and that war veterans still did not have their representative to protect their interests.

Demo said he completely understood Brkic, noting, "If the way to select new ministers was to announce vacancies, then all ministers should have been chosen that way."

Asked if his party would continue supporting the HDZ, Demo said that that was the reason why he had asked to meet with Oreskovic and that he would be accompanied by a party delegation.

"He should meet with us because we voted for him, so that we can explain the situation to him and resolve it," Demo said.
