Ivo Pogorelic holds concert in Dubrovnik

Ivo Pogorelic, one of the greatest classical musicians of today, on Tuesday evening held a concert at the Rector's Palace Atrium in Dubrovnik as part of the 67th Dubrovnik Summer Festival.

Tickets had been sold out days before the concert at which Pogorelic performed Haydn's Sonata in D major, Rondo a capriccio by Ludwig van Beethoven, Debussy's Suite pour le piano and, in the second part of the concert, Rachmaninoff's Musical moments.

Pogorelic first performed at the Dubrovnik Summer Festival after a 26-year break in 2011. He also held a concert in that city last year.

Pogorelic received his first piano lessons at the age of seven and went to Moscow at the age of twelve to study at the Central Special Music School and then at the Tchaikowsky Conservatory, the Dubrovnik Summer Festival says on its web site.

"Ever since his debut recital in New York’s Carnegie Hall in 1981, Ivo Pogorelich has created a sensation with his performances in all the great concert halls throughout the world; starting in the U.S. and followed by performances on all four continents."

He has received invitations to play with numerous major orchestras. Wherever and whenever he plays, his stunning interpretations of the music confirm the originality of his talent and intellect, the festival says.

Recordings with Pogorelic's renditions of classical music are among the best selling classical music recordings in the world.

In 1987 he was named an "Ambassador of Goodwill" by UNESCO and was the first pianist to receive that title.
