Dutch woman arrested in Qatar for adultery after reporting rape

A female Dutch tourist has been arrested in Qatar for having extramarital sex after she reported being raped in the Gulf state, her lawyer said on Sunday.

The 22-year-old said someone had drugged her and the next thing she became aware of was waking up with torn clothes in a strange flat, her lawyer Brian Lokollo told Dutch television.

Sex outside marriage is banned in the conservative Muslim country.

The Dutch Foreign Ministry said Sunday that the trial was expected to be heard in a court in the capital Doha on Monday, despite the fact that no charges had been filed yet.

The alleged rapist has also been arrested, Lokollo said. He denies the claims.

The woman has been in prison since March. Her lawyer only made the case public in the Netherlands at the weekend.

The Dutch embassy in Doha has stayed in close contact with the woman, the Foreign Ministry said.
