Austrian police detain nine men for rape of German woman at New Year

Police in Vienna have detained nine Iraqi men suspected of drugging and raping a 28-year-old German woman on New Year's Eve.

Biological evidence confirmed that the woman had been gang-raped, a police spokesman said Monday.

The men, aged between 21 and 47 years old, are believed to have drugged the woman, who awoke on New Year's Day naked in a strange apartment before going to the police.

Police said they had tracked the nine men, all of them asylum seekers, using DNA material, eye-witness accounts and images from surveillance cameras.

The men face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Last month, a German court sentenced a 21-year old Iraqi man to one year probation for sexual assault at New Year's Eve celebrations in the western city of Cologne. More than 1,100 complaints were made to Cologne police and prosecutors following mass assaults on December 31 near the city's main train station.
