Berlusconi was at serious risk of dying this week, doctor says

Former Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi was in life-threatening condition when he was hospitalized earlier this week, his doctor says.

"Berlusconi risked his life, he risked dying," Alberto Zangrillo of the San Raffaele Hospital, where the politician is due to undergo heart surgery, tells reporters.

"He arrived at the hospital in a seriously worrying state and he was aware of it," Zangrillo says, adding that Berlusconi defied doctors' orders and delayed his admission.

Zangrillo says the politician experienced heart trouble "on the night between Saturday and Sunday" but waited to cast his vote in June 5 local elections before going to hospital.
