Boris Johnson named British foreign secretary; Brexit minister added

British Prime Minister Theresa May appointed Vote Leave co-leader and former London mayor Boris Johnson as foreign secretary late Wednesday as she announced key cabinet posts after succeeding David Cameron.

May handed a new post of Brexit minister to another eurosceptic lawmaker from her Conservative Party, David Davis.

She made Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond her new Chancellor of the Exchequer after George Osborne resigned.

Amber Rudd, the government's energy and climate change secretary, will take over from May as home secretary, the prime minister's office announced.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon will remain in his post while pro-Brexit Liam Fox, a former defence secretary, will be international trade secretary.

Osborne was seen as Cameron's closest colleague and had served as his chancellor for six years, adding the role of deputy prime minister in May 2015.

Reacting to May's cabinet changes on Twitter, Osborne said May and Hammond has his "full support in the big challenge that lies ahead." "It's been a privilege to be Chancellor these last six years," he said. "Others will judge - I hope I've left the economy in a better state than I found it."
