Cerar wants to discuss regugee crisis with Croatia's new PM

Slovenian Prime Minister Miro Cerar visited the refugee centre at Dobova on Friday, thanking everyone who had helped in the transit of 380,000 migrants through Slovenia and hoping to meet with Croatia's new prime minister as soon as possible to talk about the refugee crisis.

He said a final solution to the refugee crisis required the cooperation of all European Union countries and better control of the external borders.

"Technical obstacles on the border with Croatia are necessary, but cooperation is too," Cerar said, adding that the wire fence on the border with Croatia would stay until the crisis was solved.

Croatia has improved cooperation since the beginning of the refugee crisis, when it let migrants through without sufficient control and agreement with Slovenia, but the cooperation can be improved further, Cerar said. "As soon as it's possible, I'll meet with the new Croatian prime minister and discuss this with him."

He said the fence along the border was necessary because another mass influx of migrants to Europe's borders was possible. "Slovenia must prepare for even more challenging scenarios, but we are working together with other European states on how to deal with the refugee crisis. If that succeeds, we'll remove the fence obstacles. Nothing will make me happier."

"But as long as there's a danger of a mass of refugees dispersing on our territory, I'm responsible for making Slovenia safe and effectively monitoring the refugee influx," Cerar said, adding that Slovenia would deal with the refugee flow in line with Austria's and Germany's decisions.
