Croatia among EU countries with low job vacancy rates

In the last quarter of 2015 Croatia was among the European Union countries with low job vacancy rates, alongside Cyprus, Ireland, Portugal and Spain, according to a report by the EU statistical office Eurostat on Friday.

The job vacancy rate in Croatia was 0.7% in the fourth quarter of 2015, down 0.1 percentage points from the previous quarter. Countries with similar job vacancy rates were Cyprus (0.7%), Ireland (0.8%), Portugal and Spain (both 0.6%).

The lowest rate was recorded in Poland, 0.5%, while the highest rates were recorded in Germany and the United Kingdom (both 2.6%), the Czech Republic (2.4%) and Belgium (2.2%).

The job vacancy rate in the 28-member EU was 1.7% in the fourth quarter of 2015, up from 1.6% in the previous quarter and the fourth quarter of 2014. The rate in the 19-member euro area was 1.6%, up from 1.5% in the previous quarter and the fourth quarter of 2014.

In both the EU and the euro, area the highest job vacancy rates were recorded in services (2%), industry and construction (both 1.2%).

The job vacancy rate measures the proportion of vacant posts in the total number of jobs and shows the balance between labour market supply and demand. A higher rate signals unmet demand, and a lower rate indicates a better balance between supply and demand.
