Croatia among few EU states with employment decrease

Croatia, Portugal and Malta were the only European Union countries which recorded decreases in the number of persons employed in the third quarter of 2015, compared with the previous quarter, Eurostat, the EU's statistical office, said on Tuesday.

In Q3 2015, the number of persons employed in Croatia decreased 0.6 percent from Q2, when it increased 0.1%. In Portugal, employment decreased 0.5% and in Malta 0.3%.

Estonia (+2.1%), Hungary (+0.8%), Ireland, Spain, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom (all +0.6%) recorded the highest increases in the third quarter of 2015 compared with the previous quarter.

Croatia was also the only EU member state with a year-on-year decrease in the number of persons employed in Q3 2015, by 0.3%, after a 2.2% year-on-year jump in Q2.

There were 229.8 million employed men and women in the EU28 in Q3 2015.
