Danish minister resigns, bringing government crisis to a head

Danish Environment and Food Minister Eva Kjer Hansen resigned Saturday after having lost support in parliament, bringing to head a government crisis in the Scandinavian country.

Hansen became the centre of a crisis threatening the country's minority government Tuesday when Conservative Party leader Soren Pape Poulsen said his party no longer had confidence in her.

She has been accused of misleading parliament over the harmful effects of agricultural reforms.

"I don't want to stand in the way of Lars Lokke Rasmussen's second government," she said in a statement, referring to the prime minister's minority government which has been in office for eight months.

The Conservative Party is one of three centre-right parties, alongside the Danish People's Party and the Liberal Alliance, that Rasmussen's minority government depends on for support to push through legislation.

The government - formed in June - controls just 34 of parliament's 179 seats.

The premier, meanwhile, said he had confidence in her and mulled calling fresh elections rather than firing her.

Following Hansen's statement, Poulsen cancelled a scheduled news conference but wrote on Facebook that "we fully support" Rasmussen and his government. "Now we will look ahead," he said.

The Conservatives had planned to vote with the left-leaning opposition in a no-confidence vote against Hansen scheduled for March 2.
