Dutch police investigating possible terrorist cell in refugee camp

A possible Islamist terrorist cell based out of an asylum centre in the Netherlands is being investigated by police, the Dutch Justice Ministry said on Tuesday.

Justice Minister Ard van der Steur said the investigation was linked to arrests made by German and French police the previous week, when four Syrians were arrested on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack in the city of Dusseldorf.

France was said to have alerted Dutch authorities after one of the arrested men informed officials about a terrorist cell of the Islamic State extremist militia in a refugee camp in the city of Nimeguen, according to media reports.

A further suspected member of the extremist group was arrested in Spain on Tuesday on suspicion of recruiting militants for the war in Syria and Iraq, the Interior Ministry said.

The Moroccan man, who was believed to been in contact with high-ranking members of the Islamic State, was taken into custody in the eastern city of Valencia, where he was legally resident.

Spain has been on its second-highest terrorist alert level since June 2015.
