EU asks Turkey to restart peace talks with Kurds after deadly bombing

The European Union (EU) is urging Turkey to restart the peace process with the Kurds after an attack in the south-eastern Turkish city of Diyarbakir killed at least seven police officers.

"Turkey should re-engage in [the] Kurdish peace process, which brought so many positive and promising results in the recent past," a statement from EU foreign affairs representative Federica Mogherini said Saturday.

The EU is ready to support a peace process, the statement said.

The explosion - which injured 27 people including 14 civilians - occurred Thursday in the Baglar district, near the bus terminal, as a police bus was driving past.

Late Saturday, the state-run Anadolu news agency, citing security agency sources, reported that five soldiers and a police officer were killed in a counterterrorism operation in Mardin province in south-eastern Turkey, which has seen stepped up military operations since mid March.

Turkey's mostly Kurdish south-east has seen renewed clashes with Kurdish militants since July, when a two-year ceasefire with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) broke down.

"A genuine political dialogue in the framework of the Kurdish settlement process is the only way to achieve a peaceful and sustainable solution," Mogherini's statement said.
