EU calls for Turkey to respect freedom of the media

Turkey should respect freedom of the media and promote "high democratic standards and practices," the office of EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini says, following the government takeover of the Turkish opposition newspaper Zaman.

"Free, diverse and independent media constitute one of the cornerstones of a democratic society by facilitating the free flow of information and ideas, and by ensuring transparency and accountability," Mogherini's office says in a statement.

"Turkey, as an [EU] candidate country, needs to respect and promote high democratic standards and practices, including freedom of the media," it adds, noting that any country seeking EU membership has to guarantee fundamental rights.
