EU's Juncker rejects Brexit resignation calls: "Frankly I don't care"

The President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker said Wednesday it was unfair to blame him for the outcome of Britain's Brexit referendum and call for his resignation.

Asked whether he felt he had done enough to convince the British to stay in the EU, Juncker said Britain's government and opposition forces had asked him not to interfere with the campaign.

"I have no intention of being influenced one way or another by this kind of criticism," the head of the EU executive said at a Brussels summit. "Quite frankly, I don't care."

EU Council President Donald Tusk stood by him, saying that "Jean-Claude Juncker is the last person we can accuse" for the negative outcome of the referendum.

Before calling a referendum, British Prime Minister David Cameron extracted special membership rights for his country. Some have suggested that the concessions were not generous enough.

Tusk said the deal offered to Cameron, drafted by the commission, was the "maximum, more than maximum" possible given the constraints of EU rules and the resistances of other member states.
