Fire destroys Middle Ages film sets at famous Prague studio

A fire at the famous Barrandov film studios in Prague may have caused over 4 million dollars' worth of damage, local media reported Saturday.

Film sets at the studios were burnt down in the blaze, including a castle from the Middle Ages and some recreated Paris streets from the same period, news reports said, quoting the police and fire service.

Images from the scene showed multiple large wooden sets ablaze as firefighters moved in. Three firefighters were injured tackling the blaze, which began late Friday.

The sets were reportedly for a US production of the "Knightfall" television series.

The cost of the damage was estimated at 100 million Czech koruna (4.1 million dollars), broadcaster CTK reported.

Helicopters carrying water from the Vltava river were used to douse the flames, which burned until Saturday morning over an area of about 10,000 square metres.

The cause of the fire was not yet known.

Some 2,000 Czech and international films have been shot at the Barrandov studios since they opened in the 1930s, including many that won Oscars - such as Milos Forman's "Amadeus" - and other international prizes.
