Florence Hartmann granted early release from ICTY custody

The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) on Tuesday granted early release to Florence Hartmann, former spokeswoman for the Office of the Prosecutor, the Hague-based tribunal said.

Hartmann was arrested outside the tribunal's building last Thursday when she had arrived to attend a sentencing hearing in the case of former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic. She was arrested because in 2009 the ICTY convicted her of contempt of court for publishing classified information from the trial of former Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic and fined her 7,000 euros. After she refused to pay, the tribunal converted the fine to a sentence of seven days' imprisonment. France, her country of nationality, refused to hand her over.

In her book "Peace and Punishment", published in 2006 after she no longer worked as spokeswoman for the then Chief Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte, Hartmann wrote that the ICTY had agreed to Serbia's request that at the trial of Slobodan Milosevic parts of documents revealing the connection between the Milosevic regime and the Srebrenica massacre be censored.

ICTY President Theodor Meron on Tuesday granted the defence motion for early release, saying that Hartmann had been on good behaviour in the detention cell and had served more than two-thirds of her sentence.
