German man injures two train passengers in Austrian knife attack

A mentally impaired German man attacked and injured two passengers with a knife on a train in Austria on Tuesday, local police said.

The 60-year-old man stabbed a 19-year-old in the stomach. The other 17-year-old victim sustained injuries to his neck.

Another man, aged 22, suffered light injuries to his hand while helping police to overpower the suspect. After the train arrived at the railway station, officers armed with pepper spray were able to arrest him.

The man boarded the regional train between the towns of Bludenz and Feldkirch, in the western Austrian state of Vorarlberg.

Many of the 100-120 passengers were in shock and receiving psychiatric support, police said.

The attacker was carrying a piece of paper that indicated "greater psychological problems," regional police chief Hans-Peter Ludescher said. The German national was known to police in his home country.

The weapon was a 10-centimetre-long camping knife, Ludescher added.

On Saturday, a 27-year-old man launched an attack on a train in neighbouring Switzerland armed with a knife and flammable liquid. The attacker and a 34-year-old female train passenger both died after the attack.
