A 29-year-old man who held seven hostages in an apartment near the German city of Leipzig on Thursday has given himself up, a police spokesman said.
The man locked himself and seven others - including his mother, father, brother, and his brother's wife and children - in his apartment early Thursday after police tried to conduct a raid there in relation to a series of burglaries, the spokesman said.
Police officers surrounded the apartment in the town of Schkeuditz and held negotiations with the man for several hours before he allowed his family members to leave, gave himself up and was arrested.
The spokesman said police are currently questioning the suspect and witnesses in order to clarify the reasons for the incident.
