Germany charges teen who stabbed officer on behalf of Islamic State

A 16-year-old German-Moroccan national accused of stabbing a police officer in the neck in the city of Hanover has been charged with attempted murder and supporting a foreign terrorist organization, prosecutors said Monday.

Safia S, whose last name was withheld in line with privacy laws, carried out a "martyrdom operation" on behalf of Islamic State at Hanover's main train station in February, the federal prosecutor's office said in a statement.

Mohamad Hasan K, a 19-year-old Syrian national, has also been charged for knowing about the girl's plans and failing to alert the authorities, the statement said.

Safia's adopted Islamic State's "radical jihadist ideology" in November 2015, and planned to travel to Syria to pledge allegiance to the extremist group's self-declared caliphate, prosecutors said.

In January, she travelled to Istanbul, where she made contact with two Islamic State militants who were supposed to facilitate travel to Syria. Safia S's mother brought her back to Germany before she was able to complete her journey.

On February 26, Safia S stabbed a police officer at Hanover's main train station before being overpowered by another officer. The 34-year-old sustained life-threatening injuries and had to undergo surgery.
