Germany to host international anti-terrorism conference in summer

Berlin will host an international anti-terrorism conference in the capital in the summer, Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier told the German media on Sunday.

The main topic of the conference will be preventing young people from being seduced by terrorism, Steinmeier told the newspapers of the Funke media group.

Germany currently holds the chair of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

Steinmeier praised the role Russia was playing in the Syrian conflict. "The ceasefire, the provision of humanitarian access, the start of peace talks in Geneva, all of that would not have been feasible without the constructive involvement of Russia," he said.

The OSCE is a forum in which to agree further common steps with Russia in the fight against terrorism, he said.

Russia sent its air forces to the aid of the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in September.

Steinmeier said the ceasefire in Syria, which has largely held for four weeks, was the greatest blow to the Islamic State terrorist group.

"Government troops and the opposition are at least not mutually annihilating each other at the moment, but rather they can concentrate their forces on the fight against Islamic State and the breeding ground of terrorism," he said.

For the first time in five years of war, there was hope of defusing a conflict that had given the terrorist gangs daily sustenance, he said.
