Greek company completes second migrant reception centre

The construction of a second major migrant reception and registration centre in Greece has been completed on the Aegean island Chios, a company that sponsored the construction said Sunday.

Located in a former factory near the island's airport, the so-called hotspot can shelter up to 1,100 people, according to Hellenic Petroleum (HELPE), which is partly owned by the Greek government.

HELPE said that it equipped the centre together with local authorities and the military.

The Chios reception centre follows one built on Lesbos. Three other centres are planned for Samos, Leros and Kos for the reception and registration of economic migrants and war-zone refugees arriving across the Aegean Sea from Turkey.

All five hotspots were supposed to be operational by the end of 2015.

Around 930,000 people reached European soil via the Greek Aegean islands in 2015 and the first six weeks of this year. Virtually all continued north along the Balkan migration route, hoping to secure asylum in wealthy European countries.
