Greek president praises Germany's role in euro crisis

Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos said Monday that Athens will meet the commitments under its rescue package while praising the role played by Germany in ensuring his country remained a euro member state.

The relationship between Greece and Germany was "more than friendship," Pavlopoulos said during a meeting in Berlin with German President Joachim Gauck. "A future outside Europe and the eurozone is inconceivable for us," he said.

But ties between Germany and Greece were strained following the election of an anti-austerity government in Athens that pledged to ease the tough financial conditions imposed on the country for its international bailout.

Pavlopoulos said Greece will meet its obligations under its third aid program, which was agreed to about six months ago after tense negotiations between Athens and its eurozone partners.

More recently, Athens has emerged as a key part of Chancellor Angela Merkel's efforts to stem the flood of refugees into Germany and northern Europe after they travel by boat to Greece from Turkey.

Pavlopoulos described Merkel's liberal asylum policy as "very brave," adding that Greece will fulfil its obligations to deal with the refugee crisis, including helping to secure Europe's external borders.
