Hard left politician admits smuggling refugee into Germany

A member of parliament from Germany's hard-left The Left (Die Linke) party confirmed to dpa Sunday that he had smuggled an African refugee from Italy into Germany.

Diether Dehm was confirming a report in the Sunday edition of the tabloid Bild newspaper. He told dpa he did not wish to give further details in order to protect the young refugee.

The Bild reported that Dehm had taken the boy to his holiday home on Lake Maggiore for a few days before bringing him by car through Switzerland to Germany, where he handed the boy over to refugee reception workers.

The young man, who wanted to be reunited with his father, was not registered by immigration officials at the border, Dehm told the Bild.

Despite the fact that smuggling refugees into the country is illegal, Dehm showed no remorse: "I am at ease with myself."
