Hungary's referendum on EU migrant quota

Hungary is voting in a referendum on the European Union's plan to resettle migrants and refugees in the country.

The EU is aiming to resettle 160,000 asylum seekers stranded in Italy and Greece across the bloc, with 1,300 assigned to Hungary.

The plan was approved by a majority of EU member states last year amid a surge of migration into the EU that saw more than 1 million people reach the continent, many of them fleeing war and conflict in Syria and Afghanistan.

Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and the Czech Republic all voted against the plan. Hungary has not yet accepted any of its quota and is suing the European Union in the European Court of Justice over the redistribution plan.

It is not clear what the ramifications of a valid referendum vote would be. Either Hungary behaves contrary to EU law in the future when it comes to asylum seeker quotas, or, more unlikely, the Hungarian parliament will agree to the quota legislation retroactively.
