Italy quake death toll jumps to 278, search for survivors continues

The number of people who have died following the earthquake in central Italy has risen to 278, the country's civil defence agency says.

In a press conference in Rome, a Protezione Civile official also says 388 people have required medical care in hospital, while about 2,500 are homeless as a result of the quake.

In their previous count, the official death toll stood at 267.

The Protezione Civile says fire services were still looking for people amid the rubble, but cannot confirm that at least 15 people are missing, as said by the mayor of the town of Amatrice.
